Published average card fees by business size
July to September 2026. Fees as a share of card sales. Each large provider publishes its own figures; the average is the simple average across the 4 below. These are fees on transactions, not terminal rental or other charges, and NAB says its figures exclude GST. So for a fair comparison, use your fees before GST and without those charges.
| Business size | Average | Lowest to highest |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $1 million of card sales a year | 0.90% | 0.79% to 1.08% |
| $1 million to $10 million of card sales a year | 0.76% | 0.65% to 1.02% |

What changed on 1 October 2026
- The Reserve Bank's changes from 1 October 2026 remove surcharging on eftpos, Visa and Mastercard. A business that used to add a surcharge may now be carrying these fees itself.
- Interchange caps fell from 1 October 2026 (consumer credit 0.3%, debit 8c + 0.16%). Whether that reaches the business depends on its plan: on a single flat rate it's up to the provider.
