SMEInspect
What we check

Everything we check, and how.

Each cost we review, how we find a better price, and what happens when you approve a change. Nothing changes without your approval.

Your Authority to Act is the permission you sign once so we can deal with your suppliers for you. It never agrees to anything binding without your approval.

Card and EFTPOS fees

Often the quickest win. Since 1 October 2026 you can't add a surcharge for eftpos, Visa or Mastercard. So you pay these fees yourself.

What we look at

From your merchant statements we work out what you really pay on each sale, and compare it with providers' published prices and the published average for a business your size.

What happens next

With your approval and your Authority to Act, we ask the new provider to set up your account on the terms we compared. Payment providers need your own signature on their merchant agreement, so the new provider sends it to you to sign.

We tell you what to expect, and keep track until the new rates show on a statement. Your current provider keeps working until the new one is set up.

Electricity and gas

Contracts quietly roll onto standard rates when they end. We line up a better deal before yours expires.

What we look at

Every plan on offer for your address. We price each one on your own use, from your bills or your meter's readings. That includes any solar power you send back to the grid. We leave out companies not taking new customers. A few plans need more detail than a bill shows, so we can't price them. Your report lists those. For bigger sites, power companies can also send a private written offer.

What happens next

With your approval and your consent, we make the switch for you: we send your sign-up to the new retailer as your representative. You don't fill in its form. We use your Authority to Act for this.

The new retailer may text, email or call you to check. That's normal. Your current energy company closes your old account by itself when the switch goes through. Your power stays on. You can still change your mind in the cooling-off time the law gives you.

Where a retailer only takes sign-ups on its own form, we show you that form step by step, with every answer ready to copy.

Phone and internet

Old plans, unused lines and bundles you've outgrown.

What we look at

From your bills: lines with no calls, texts or data, plans that have crept up, and providers' published business plans for the same services.

What happens next

With your approval and your Authority to Act, we ask the new provider to set up the services we compared, keeping your numbers. Moving a number needs the account details on your current bill, which we already have; your current provider may text you a code to confirm the move.

We keep track until the first bill on the new terms arrives. Lines we found unused are cancelled only when you say so.

Software subscriptions

Licences nobody uses, tools that overlap, and plans that went up at renewal.

What we look at

From your own invoices: monthly plans where paying yearly costs less, two tools doing the same job, the same plan billed twice, and price rises at renewal.

What happens next

Changes to a software subscription are made in your own software account, as only its owner can. Once you approve, we tell you exactly what to change.

We check the next invoice shows the new price.

Contract terms

Auto-renewals, exit fees and price-rise clauses, flagged in plain English with the key dates.

What we look at

Read from your contracts and bills: renewal dates, exit fees, price-rise clauses and notice periods.

What happens next

Nothing to change. The dates and clauses are in your report, and we remind you before the renewals we know about.

Supplier health

A check of public records for signs a key supplier is in trouble, such as insolvency or court judgments.

What we look at

Free public registers, for your key suppliers: insolvency, court judgments and deregistration.

What happens next

Nothing to change. We show you the facts; what you do about them is up to you.

Waste and cleaning

Local contracts that are rarely re-quoted. We get 2 or 3 written quotes for the same job, so you compare like with like.

What we look at

2 or 3 written quotes, each for the same job you have now: the same bins and pickups, or the same cleaning hours.

What happens next

With your approval and your Authority to Act, we ask the new supplier to set you up on the quote we compared. The new supplier sends you its agreement to sign.

Notice to your current supplier is timed to your contract's notice period. We keep track until the first bill on the new terms arrives.

Couriers and freight

Rates that drift up as your volumes change. We get written quotes for the same work.

What we look at

2 or 3 written quotes, each for the same work you send now: the same volumes, sizes and delivery areas.

What happens next

With your approval and your Authority to Act, we ask the new carrier to open an account for you on the quote we compared. The new carrier may send you its terms to accept.

We keep track until the first invoice on the new terms arrives.

Insurance (facts only)

Your policies, premiums, renewal dates and broker fees in one place. Facts only: we don't give insurance advice.

What we look at

Facts only, from your policy documents. We don't compare insurers, policies or cover.

What happens next

We don't compare, recommend or change insurance. The facts are in your report, and we remind you before the renewals we know about.

If you'd like a review, we can introduce you to a licensed insurance broker. They advise you under their own licence. They pay us a flat fee for some covers, or a share of their commission for business insurance, and we show you which, in dollars, first. We don't give insurance advice.

Bank fees and loans

Account fees, and overdraft and loan margins, that are rarely reviewed once they're set up.

What we look at

From the bank, loan and overdraft statements you send: a year's interest and fees for each facility. Business banking only.

What happens next

With your approval and your Authority to Act, we write to your bank asking it to review the fees and interest margin on the facilities we listed. Your bank decides; nothing changes unless you approve what it offers.

Vehicle and equipment finance

Business finance on a vehicle or equipment that's ending, or something you plan to buy. Facts and an introduction only.

What we look at

What you tell us: the vehicle or equipment, and when its finance ends or what you plan to buy. Business finance only: we don't introduce personal or home lending, or compare loans.

What happens next

If your vehicle or equipment finance is ending, or you plan to buy, tell us and we'll introduce you to a licensed finance broker for business finance. They advise and arrange any finance under their own licence; any fee they pay us is shown to you in dollars first. We don't give credit advice.

Workers compensation

Premiums worked out on the wrong industry code, or on wages that shouldn't count.

What we look at

Your premium notice checked against the scheme's own published rules: the industry code and which wages count. For the state schemes in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia; elsewhere, facts only.

What happens next

A premium correction is lodged by you with your scheme or insurer, as the policy holder. Once you approve, we email you the letter, ready to send, with the facts and figures.

Your scheme or insurer reviews it and reissues the premium notice.

Money back on past overcharges

Mistakes we can prove from your own bills, recovered for you.

What we look at

From your bills and Xero records: handset repayments charged after the contract ended, an invoice paid twice, and card fees above the rate in your contract.

What happens next

With your approval and your Authority to Act, we ask the supplier in writing for a refund, with the evidence. The refund is paid to you, never to us. Our fee is 25% of what is actually refunded or credited to you, charged only once the supplier confirms it.

Payment checks

Worth checking before you pay: a supplier's bank details changing, the same invoice entered twice, or a supplier whose ABN is cancelled.

What we look at

We check new supplier bills and bank details in Xero every day, against your own records and the public ABN register.

What happens next

Nothing to change. The people who approve payments see what's worth checking, with the facts. Included with monitoring.

Rent and leases (facts only)

Your rent, outgoings, review dates and the deadline to renew, so an option date isn't missed.

What we look at

Facts only, from your lease and rent bills. For a retail lease we also check outgoings and land tax against your state's retail leases law.

What happens next

We don't negotiate leases or give leasing advice. The facts are in your report, and we remind you before each rent review, the lease expiry and the last day to take up an option to renew.

If you'd like help with a rent review, option or renewal, we can introduce you to a licensed tenant advocate or leasing lawyer. They advise you under their own licence, and any fee they pay us is shown to you in dollars first.

Not a comparison site

We work from your bills, then do the work

A comparison site shows you prices. We price the options on your own use, then make or arrange the change.

Every current energy plan

We price every current published plan for your address on your own use. We leave out retailers not taking new customers, and the few plans we can't price from your bills, such as demand tariffs without meter data; your report lists them.

No energy retailer pays us

No energy retailer pays SMEInspect to bid, for a referral or on your deal, so we have no conflict of interest. You pay us 25% of the first year's saving, and only if you save.

Ranked on your cost

The system that ranks your options can't see what any supplier pays us. Where a supplier pays a commission, you see it in dollars before you approve.

Staying put is an option

Staying as you are is always compared. Often the best result is your current supplier matching the price.

We do the work

We don't hand you a list of links. With your approval we arrange the change and the paperwork, or, where only you can make it, tell you exactly what to do. Then we check the saving on your next bill.

Before you change

What people ask before a change

What happens to my direct debits and bank details?+

Your bank accounts stay where they are. When you change supplier, you set up how you pay the new one as part of signing up, and your old supplier sends a final bill, paid the way you pay it now. A new card provider pays your takings into the bank account you choose, and your old terminals keep working until the new ones are set up. When we ask your bank to review its fees, your accounts, direct debits and cards don't change at all.

Will my services be interrupted?+

No. Your power and gas stay on throughout: the new retailer takes over at a meter read, and the networks handle the transfer. For card payments and phone lines, your current provider keeps working until the new one is set up.

Do you just pick the cheapest?+

No. We compare each option's total cost for the first year, its contract and what's involved for you, and staying as you are is always one of the options. If we don't recommend the cheapest, we say why. You can choose a different option, or no change.

How do I know a cheaper quote isn't a worse service?+

For waste, cleaning, couriers and freight, we ask you once what mustn't change, like pickup times, bin sizes or delivery areas. Then every supplier quotes for the same written job: the same bins and pickups, the same cleaning hours, or the same volumes and delivery areas you have now, and whatever you told us must stay. So the prices compare like with like, and you see each quote's contract before you approve.

Do you compare insurance?+

No. Your report shows the facts: each policy, its premium, renewal date and broker fees. We don't compare insurers, policies or cover, or say whether you have enough.
